There’s a special kind of magic that comes with the arrival of autumn in Victoria. The air turns crisp, the leaves shift to rich shades of amber and crimson, and the countryside invites you to slow down and savour the season. Just over an hour from Melbourne’s bustling streets, the charming town of Trentham offers the perfect autumn escape—and at the heart of it all stands The Cosmopolitan Hotel.
Built in 1866 and lovingly restored by owner Rod Hughes, The Cosmopolitan Hotel is more than a historic pub—it’s a haven for those seeking comfort, connection, and a taste of local charm. Rod’s thoughtful refurbishment has breathed new life into this iconic venue, blending its rich history with modern elegance. Step inside, and you’re welcomed by the warm glow of crackling fireplaces, rustic wooden beams, and intimate nooks that invite you to settle in and stay a while. As the autumn chill sets in, there’s nothing quite like curling up with a glass of local red wine, surrounded by the gentle hum of conversation and the scent of seasonal dishes wafting from the kitchen.
Autumn is a feast for the senses at The Cosmopolitan. The kitchen celebrates the season’s bounty with hearty, comforting dishes crafted from locally sourced produce. Imagine tender slow-cooked lamb served with roasted root vegetables, or a rich pumpkin risotto topped with crispy sage—each bite offering warmth and flavour that echo the changing landscape outside. Paired with a glass of regional wine or a locally brewed ale, every meal feels like a celebration of autumn’s harvest.
Step outside, and the hotel’s sprawling gardens are bathed in golden light, their pathways carpeted with fallen leaves. The outdoor spaces come alive in autumn, offering the perfect setting to enjoy a crisp afternoon drink under the canopy of changing trees. Whether you’re sharing stories over a few beers with friends or enjoying a quiet moment in one of the tucked-away corners, The Cosmopolitan’s gardens are as inviting as ever. For those special occasions, the hotel’s private garden offers an enchanting backdrop for romantic weddings or intimate celebrations—a secluded haven where autumn’s beauty adds an extra layer of charm.
Beyond the hotel, Trentham itself is a town made for autumn wanderings. Meander through its tree-lined streets, explore the quaint local stores filled with artisan goods, or take a scenic walk to the nearby Trentham Falls, where the cascading waters are framed by the fiery colours of the season. And for those looking to fully immerse themselves in the region, a stay at the nearby Hotel Trentham makes for the perfect complement to your weekend escape. Pair your visit with a tour of local wineries, where you can sip and savour the best of the region’s vintages amidst the vines.
Rod Hughes has transformed The Cosmopolitan Hotel into more than just a destination—it’s a place where history, comfort, and community come together. His passion for preserving the hotel’s legacy while creating a welcoming space for all is evident in every detail. “This place isn’t just a pub,” Rod shares. “It’s a gathering place, a space where people can slow down and truly enjoy what makes Trentham special.”
This autumn, let The Cosmopolitan Hotel be your seasonal retreat. Embrace the slower pace, the rich flavours, and the cosy moments that only this time of year can offer. Whether it’s a romantic weekend, a celebration with friends, or simply a well-deserved escape, The Cosmopolitan invites you to experience the warmth of Trentham in its most beautiful season.
Chief Editor’s Note: My Autumn Stay at The Cosmo
There’s something unforgettable about The Cosmopolitan Hotel in autumn. I didn’t just visit—I sunk into it. From the moment I arrived in Trentham, with its trees ablaze in amber and gold, the world felt quieter, slower, and a little more beautiful.
Stepping into The Cosmo was like entering a friend’s country home—one with impeccable taste, a deep sense of history, and a kitchen that knows exactly what you need. I sat near the window in the main dining room, a perfect vantage point to watch the golden light spill through the leaves outside. Inside, the hum of conversation, the gentle warmth of the fire, and the scent of something rich and savoury wafting in from the kitchen set the tone.
Croquettes with spiced potato, sago, cashews, and date & tamarind chutney
To start, I ordered the croquettes—spiced potato, cashew, and sago with a date and tamarind chutney. Earthy and warming, with a perfect crunch. My main was the Macedon Ranges lamb rack—perfectly pink, crusted with rosemary and mint pesto, served over a spring vegetable risotto so comforting it practically whispered “stay a little longer.” I paired it with a glass of local shiraz from the wine lounge, tucked away just beyond the bar (which you absolutely must explore).
Dessert? The dark chocolate and salted caramel tart. Rich. Silky. Utterly indulgent. Every element of the dish—and the experience—felt considered but never fussy. Just good food, good wine, and that feeling you get when you know you’ve found somewhere special.
Outside, locals and travellers gathered in the garden, nursing glasses of wine, enjoying that gentle, golden-hour lull. I could see why this space has become a go-to for celebrations. With its private garden and intimate spaces, it’s made for milestones—weddings, birthdays, or that long overdue weekend with friends.
Rod Hughes, the man behind it all, greeted guests like old mates, always with a story and a laugh. It’s clear this isn’t just a hotel to him—it’s part of the community’s soul. And now, it’s become a little part of mine too.
Trust me—book the weekend. Let the fire warm your hands, let the lamb melt on your tongue, and let autumn in Trentham work its magic. You’ll fall in love—I know I did.
