In the grand corridors of Shanghai's Long Museum West Bund, Louis Vuitton revealed its latest spectacle—the women’s pre-fall ‘24 collection. Crafted by the visionary Nicolas Ghesquière and avant-garde artist Sun Yitian, this collection is a vibrant celebration of modernity, pulsing with cultural undertones that demand a closer look.
Sun Yitian, a Beijing-born talent, has captivated the art world with her whimsical and hyper-realistic paintings—think doll heads, inflated animals, and the signature duckling. Yet, beneath the playful artistry lies a depth often overlooked. “I don’t want people to just see this as a collaborative bag or limited-edition perfume with a rabbit or a duck on it," Sun insists in a statement to Jing Daily. "I want them to dig deeper and grasp the cultural significance and creative concepts woven into this product collaboration.”
On the other side of this artistic duo stands Nicolas Ghesquière, a titan in the fashion industry who has been steering Louis Vuitton’s women’s designs since 2013. His tenure has been marked by groundbreaking showcases, like the unforgettable collaboration at Paris' Louvre—a historic melding of museum majesty with haute couture.
For this collection, Nicolas has drawn rich inspiration from Sun Yitian’s vivid colours, whimsical shapes, and rich cultural heritage. These elements breathe life into the collection’s dynamic ensembles, prominently featuring Yitian’s ‘Peep into Two Worlds with One Eye’—an exploration of toy manufacturing and mass production in China, echoing the essence of 'Made in China.'
As Yitian notes on her Instagram, “My 7 toy-like animals will be memorably linked to the Louis Vuitton Prefall collection as an artistic expression rendered with fun and fantasy.”
This collaborative effort between Nicolas Ghesquière and Sun Yitian not only showcases a convergence of fashion and art but also serves as a canvas for cultural storytelling, woven seamlessly into the fabric of each garment. It's a collection that celebrates more than just style—it narrates a story of heritage, creativity, and the unending dialogue between two distinct worlds.
