Louis Vuitton's Nicolas Ghesquière never shies away from a grand location for his shows. For nearly a decade, his fashion shows have taken place in some of the most iconic architectural wonders of the 20th century. However, this year's resort show was unlike any other. Set on Isola Bella, a private island in Lake Maggiore that has belonged to Italy’s Borromeo clan for 500 years, the collection was inspired by the watery surroundings and featured an array of mermaid-inspired designs.
Despite the rain pouring down in sheets, the show went on as planned in an earlier time slot. The collection started with scuba gear featuring fin-like collars and water droplet embellishments. Ghesquière mixed neoprene tank suits with lavish courtly robes, paired mermaid-scale sequin skirts with naval jackets, and topped them off with custom-made baroque headgear from an atelier in Rome.
As the mermaids found their sea legs, the collection evolved into more everyday pieces that included brushed cashmere sweaters, embroidered lace "jeans," and classically cut coats. The show ended with a range of long dresses in pastel shades that were delicate and bold simultaneously, featuring a mix of silk, georgette, organza, and lace.
The collection had the dreaminess of a fairytale and was a tribute to Italy's patrimony of craft. Who needs mysterious lakes when you have the power of imagination? Louis Vuitton's resort 2019 collection was truly a captivating and transportive show.
